Cairo Hosts Senior Palestinian Delegation as Egypt Pushes for Unified National Stance

Egypt’s intelligence leader had a meeting with a ranking group from the Palestinian Authority in Cairo on Sunday. This is part of an effort by Cairo to bring together different Palestinian groups. The situation in the West Bank is getting worse. Hassan Rashad, who is in charge of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service met with the group that was led by the Vice President.

The President of the Palestinian National Council and the head of intelligence were also there. The discussion was about the situation in the West Bank and also about preparing for Palestinian elections. Both sides agreed to work and to deal with the problems that the Palestinian cause is facing right now.

The Cairo meeting came the same day Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke by phone with the Palestinian Vice President, a call that touched on similar ground but carried a sharper diplomatic edge.

Abdelatty used the conversation to denounce Israel’s continued expansion of settlements, a rise in settler violence, and what he described as violations in East Jerusalem and at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s firm opposition to settlement construction in the E1 area, cautioning that the project risks splitting the West Bank in two, cutting off and isolating East Jerusalem, and derailing any future Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The two officials also discussed progress on implementing the first phase of the US-brokered Gaza peace framework put forward under President Donald Trump, and the steps needed to transition into its second stage.

The dual-track diplomacy — an intelligence-level meeting paired with a foreign ministry call — underscores Egypt’s continued role as a central mediator in Palestinian affairs, both in reconciling internal political divisions and in confronting Israeli policy on the ground.

Cairo has positioned itself as a key broker in Gaza ceasefire negotiations throughout the ongoing conflict, alongside Qatar and the United States.
