Egypt’s Health Ministry is set to boost its efforts to construct three new bone marrow transplant units as part of its 2026/27 fiscal year investment programme, while 35 health-care projects are currently underway in 13 gubernatorial regions, aiming to increase treatment capacity and reduce patient waiting lists. Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar gave an overview of the progress made during a meeting regarding the equipment of hospitals in the Secretariat of Specialized Medical Centers, ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar stated.
The minister urged for accelerated implementation of the expansion campaign, which the ministry said was designed to clear the waiting lists and give access to specialized care to more patients nationwide.
The three transplant units form part of a larger slate of 17 additional projects the Secretariat is planning for the coming fiscal year, officials said, as the ministry went over investment spending, financial commitments and budget allocations tied to the programme. No locations, cost estimates or expected opening dates were disclosed for the new units.
Separately, officials reviewed implementation timelines for the 35 projects currently in progress across the 13 governorates. Both the new units and the ongoing projects fall under the Secretariat’s five-year development plan running through 2030, which is designed to expand the capacity of specialized hospitals and broaden the range of medical services on offer.
The meeting also touched on the status of several flagship facilities, including the Medical City, Nile Children’s City, Gustave Roussy Hospital and Menouf Hospital, though the ministry gave no completion rates or timelines for any of them.
Beyond infrastructure, discussions covered the Medical Bridge initiative, a programme using digital technology to strengthen healthcare delivery in border governorates and support cross-regional medical cooperation.
Abdel Ghaffar called for partnerships with international firms to advance the digital transformation of Secretariat-run hospitals, though no companies or investment figures were named.
The minister also directed officials to draft a comprehensive plan for renovating doctors’ accommodation across the Secretariat’s hospital network, folding the initiative into the broader development push. Egypt Journal
