ABB Egypt has started work on a solar initiative that will see it build solar panels on the roofs of some of its manufacturing facilities, in collaboration with the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE). The project is set to reduce emissions at the industrial sites and diversify the firm’s energy sources. ABB Egypt Solar Project
The installations are expected to have a combined capacity of 3.3 MW and generate 5.05 GWh of electricity per year when fully operational, reports ABB.
Furthermore, the company estimates that the solar farms will save 2,846 tonnes of carbon emission, equivalent to preventing the combustion of over 1.22 million litres of fuel. The project is set to feed electricity into Egypt’s national grid in 2027 and will last 30 years.
The project feeds into “Shams Al-Sinaa” (“Sun of Industry”), a national initiative aiming to install up to 1,000 MW of rooftop solar capacity across Egyptian factories, part of the government’s broader drive to green the industrial sector’s energy mix.
ABB Egypt Chairperson Ahmed Hammad said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to backing Egypt’s shift toward more sustainable manufacturing, adding that ABB intends to keep investing in electrification, automation and digital tools to boost industrial efficiency and lower emissions.
Abdullah Kassem, the company’s Electrification Commercial Lead and a board member, said the solar buildout would improve energy efficiency, make power supply more reliable, and cut operating costs — noting ABB has set a target of sourcing 70% of its own operational energy from solar by 2027.
RCREEE’s Acting Executive Director, Maged Mahmoud, called the collaboration a concrete model of how regional institutions and private companies can work together to speed up the shift to the lower-emission industry.
RCREEE, an intergovernmental organization supporting renewable energy policy across Arab states, has positioned such public-private partnerships as central to accelerating clean energy adoption in the region.
ABB said the project fits into its wider strategy of shrinking its environmental footprint while promoting renewable energy and efficiency solutions across industrial operations in Egypt. Eqypt Journal
