Xi Jinping to Visit Cairo for Talks With El-Sisi as Egypt-China Ties Deepen

Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to Egypt in the coming days for an official visit that will include direct talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Egypt’s Presidency announced Wednesday.

The trip forms part of a wider regional tour: China’s foreign ministry said Xi will attend the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Bishkek before making state visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt between August 30 and September 3, following formal invitations extended by both countries’ leaders.

According to the Egyptian Presidency spokesperson, the Cairo leg of the trip will focus on deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations across multiple areas of shared interest, alongside an exchange of views on regional and international developments.

The spokesperson described the upcoming meeting as a reflection of the strong bilateral relationship Egypt and China have built over recent years, though no further details on the visit’s agenda or specific agreements under discussion have yet been released.

This will not be Xi’s first trip to Egypt. He last visited in January 2016, a trip that produced an announcement of joint projects in electricity, infrastructure and transport worth a combined $15 billion — cooperation that has since expanded into other sectors, including trade and investment.

The timing of the visit places Egypt alongside Kyrgyzstan as one of two states receiving high-level attention from Beijing this week, underscoring China’s continued interest in expanding its footprint across the Middle East and Central Asia.

For Cairo, the visit offers an opportunity to reinforce economic and diplomatic links with one of its largest trading partners at a moment when Egypt has been actively courting foreign investment across several sectors of its economy.

No details have been released yet on the specific outcomes expected from the El-Sisi–Xi meeting, though officials on both sides have signaled the talks will center on strengthening long-term strategic cooperation.
